Been really busy but just spent a few minutes skimming what’s been going on around the internet and out there in the material world as well. My short cut to interesting news stories is always Detention Slip, and when I let a week pass by, all kinds of interesting things happen out there in school land. I’ll just post a hand full of interesting news stories that resonate here and you can jump to them at leisure.
1. Heterosexism at it’s finest: A Rite of Hazing, Now Out in the Open
MILLBURN, N.J. — The principal of Millburn High, New Jersey’s top-ranked high school, says it has gone on for a decade: annual hazing by senior girls who create a “slut list” of incoming freshmen for the first day of school. A dozen or more names are written on a piece of notebook paper, with crass descriptions, and copies are passed around — hundreds this year, some say.
And this little nugget gets buried in the school intervention… girls attacking girls by making a slut list yikes, girls are so mean. We’ve got to catch whoever has that piece of paper… but how about this type of behavior?
And that is not the only type of hazing that goes on, some girls say. Seniors blow whistles in some girls’ faces and jostle or push them into lockers, leaving them afraid to come to school the next day.
Do you think there will be any sort of investigation as to what else might be going on among the girls and boys at Millburn High? Me neither.
2. Next Unit up for study: Islamophobia 101: Student Upset Over Graphic 9/11 Film
SOMERSET, Ky. (Sept. 22) — A 17-year-old student is seeking counseling after her class at Pulaski County High School watched a short film that showed beheadings and other violence allegedly committed by Muslims, her father said Tuesday.
“The intent of the lesson and discussion was very appropriate,” Superintendent Eaton said. “However, the teacher’s choice of the clip was not appropriate, and that’s been dealt with.
So whatever lesson and discussion occurred, that part was fine, it was just the ‘clip’ (a.k.a. the anti-muslim propaganda film) that the teacher selected that a problem. Lesson and discussion = Fruitful Anti-Islamic propaganda movie = inappropraite. And what was that clip…
The film “Fitna,” made by the anti-Islam and anti-immigration Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders. The film was shown to the class on Sept. 11.
The film sparked violent protests around the Muslim world last year for linking Quranic verses with footage of terrorist attacks. Since then, Britain has barred Wilders from entering that country because of his anti-Islamic views.
So the intent and the discussion were appropriate huh Mr. Superintendent. Just what was the intent again? Oh yea, tolerance and peace. Okay, got it.
3. And just in case you’re the kind of values voter who thinks patriotism and jingoism are cute and sweet. Welllll not when the President is a scary socialist foreigner who doesn’t like white people (except maybe his mother).
FOX news (9/24): Review Ordered of Video Showing Students Singing Praises of President Obama
So… this is what happens when a teacher decides it’s okay to combine Black History Month with a tribute to the first black U.S. President. Like singing songs about Americana is normal or something! Here’s the video of a bunch of elementary children singing a song about that scary President guy. You know the one who wanted to speak to our nations school children a few weeks back:
And here’s the reaction:
“I’m stunned — I can’t believe it’s our school,” said Jim Pronchik, who told FOXNews.com his 8-year-old son Jimmy was one of the 18 students in the video. “We don’t want to praise this guy like he’s a god or an idol or a king or anything like that. That’s the wrong message to be sending.”
Now I have to concur – I am no fan of nationalistic jingoistic nonsense. But I must say, having watched the ballad of Ronnie Reagan at the Republican National Convention and this memorable clip of “Why should God Bless America?” from last years Value Voters conference, I am quite surprised to hear that some of these folks shared my concerns about hero worshiping nationalistic propaganda with religious undertones.
4. And finally last but never least in the realm of escalating school violence: Texas Teacher Stabbed to Death by Student in Classroom
TYLER, Tx (9/23) A Texas teacher who helped children with special needs by playing them the guitar was stabbed to death by a juvenile student at a high school in Tyler on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Reading about extreme violence just weighs me down. There are few facts on this story now, just boy gets angry, boy brings knife to school and boy repeatedly and fatally stabbs teacher.
